The Core Case Study: Pentagon Explosion
On May 23rd, 2023 an image of a Pentagon Explosion went viral. Within Minutes the image managed to move stock prices dramatically, with it also some crypto values, like Ethereum.
But the image wasn't sophisticated, in fact it wass full of artefacts (so-called 'blobsters')
Somehow, despite of (or because of) its imperfections, the image spoke to collective panic and memory, echoing past 'real' explosions at the Pentagon.
Within 4 minutes, the image was identified as a 'fake' or 'hoax'. The markets recovered, while certain actors behind the hoax, likely became much wealthier.
